IDMS shutdown - two different ways to do it

Hi all,

This is a seemingly simple question, still I would like some expert
feedback. Thanks.

There are two basic ways to shutdown an IDMS CV/DC:
1: When logged on, you can issue ""DCML SHUTDOWN""
2: Or from TSO, issue MVS command ""P IDMSname"".

I've used both methods, and on the surface they both appear to be okay. I'm
just wondering if perhaps ""DCML SHUTDOWN"" might perhaps do a few extra
things. Is one method to be preferred over another??

well ... i think you mean DCMT SHUTDOWN(,IMMEDIATE)
i would always do immediate, but opinions vary

the P IDMSxxxx is not an IDMS command, but a script to an automation
tool (OPSMVS?)
I have worked as shops where the P did more than an IDMS shutdown
(such as close vtam lines, etc)

there is a third method ... reply to the outstanding reply of the
console line shutdown
(no confirmation is required or even allowed)(i think)

Re: IDMS shutdown - two different ways to do it
"DCMT SHUTDOWN, or the cv equvialent from the outstanding reply is
SHUTDOWN is much much better then P IDMSname, which flushes the job out
of JES. If IDMS does not respond to its own shutdown commands, you can
do a C IDMSname, which is an MVS cancel of the IDMS job, but P (for
purge) is too drastic, it does not let mvs give control to the IDMS
ESTAE.
Hope this helps.

"It is documented that four ways exists, three of the four were discussed
in this exchange.

1. SHUTDOWN

2. SHUTDOWN IMM

3. CANCEL

Number 4 is ABORT. However I can not recall anyone ever using ABORT
method.

Mike,

The command should be 'DCMT SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE (IMM)'. The IMMEDIATE
instructs the CV to cancel all active run-units and then shutdown the CV.
Without using IMMEDIATE, any active run-unit will finish; before, the CV
is
shutdown. There may be times when the IMMEDIATE is not appropriate, but
this would be a judgment call and I always issued the command with
IMMEDIATE.

I am not familiar with this MVS command: ""P IDMSname"".

A REPLY may be issued as a console command and issue the SHUTDOWN or
SHUTDOWN IMM. This is how operators normally shutdown CVs. At startup a
CV
will return a message like this: @010 REPLY WITH REQUEST TO IDMS V61. To
shut this CV down from the console, issue one of the following commands: R
10,SHUTDOWN IMM or R 10,SHUTDOWN.

I have only canceled CVs when absolutely necessary, i.e. when they will
not
shutdown normally. I issue the cancel by placing a 'C' by the executing
CV
job.

Good Luck,

John Collins
