CA-1 and Unload/Reload

Discussion created by ca.portal.admin on Dec 31, 2006
Hello All:

When performing a very large unload and reload we are having to use work
tapes as DASD in unavailable. We are also using sort exit and reuse work
files
but CA-1 will not allow this to happen when it tries to write on the
work tape
a second time.

Is anyone aware of a work around for this situation?

Re: CA-1 and Unload/Reload
"I had the same problem. Temporary datasets appear to work differently for
tape and DASD.
There are two solutions.
1. Run a stepped reload in separate jobs.
2. Don't use the REUSE parameter, you will however temporarily use
more tapes.
For small unload/reloads I like the second solution. For long running
reloads I prefer number 1 as it allows for restarts as long as the datasets
are cataloged.

Re: IDMS-L Digest - 23 Dec 2006 to 1 Jan 2007 (#2007-1)
"Hi Bill - & Happy new Year to everyone on the list (that includes you
too, Bill :D)

FWIW, the last time I had such a problem was when I was running under
VSE with CA-DYNAM/T as the tape manager - not sure what your environment
is but this sounds like one of the products acquired many years ago from
UCCEL, but I can't remember whether their stuff was VSE or MVS, although
VSE springs to mind.

Nevertheless, what we had to do was to deactivate the tape manager
altogether and use hard assigns to the tape drives. With Dynam/T under
VSE, this could be done easily for the target job without affecting the
rest of the system. Not sure about CA-1, of course. In case you
haven't thought about this as a solution, while it's not particularly
elegant, it might just be the most straightforward and easiest one to
implement.

Hope this helps!

Mike
