IDMS R16 and Webservices

Discussion created by ca.portal.admin on Feb 6, 2007
Hi Everyone,

Does anyone have any experience setting up Webservices on the Mainframe
using IDMS database? Any information on what needs to be done to
accomplish this or where I can get more information would be
appreciated.

Thanks,
Prince.

Re: IDMS R16 and Webservices
"Prince,
At Delta Dental of California, we used CA's IDMS Server and SQL products with a Java front-end. The Java programs called IDMS DML COBOL programs and ADSO dialogs. The great thing about it was being able to use existing code and called modules. The COBOL programs can call DC COBOL programs. Also, the performance closely matched that of those that access IDMS databases directly. I did a presentation on it at the IUA Workshop in Dallas last April. You can view it by going to my website: www.divaprogrammer.com and selecting the Credentials tab. I also have code samples. Let me know if you have any questions.

Transferring old IDMSBCF BACKUPs to CA-VTAPE
"Our client is moving to re-route all or most of the physical tapes
currently being written to use CA-VTAPE instead. Part of this process is
to load as many of the existing physical tapes into CA-VTAPE as possible.
To do this, the client has a product called TAPECOPY sold by a vendor
called OpenTech. The question has been asked as to whether the tapes
written using the BACKUP command in IDMSBCF can be loaded using this
technology. Since I believe that BACKUP writes a physical sequential file
onto a standard lableled tape, I don't see why there could be a problem but
the backups in question are used for Disaster Recovery so I'd like to be
sure.

I opened an issue with CA and Cal Domingue said: ""we have no reported
problems with clients keeping backups on virtual tapes. We don't have
anything that I can find specifically on the product CA-VTAPE, but we do
have lots of folks using virtual tape with no problem. We also have nothing
reported for OpenTech or TapeCopy. If this product makes an exact copy of
the file onto virtual tape, it shouldn't be any problem...... You might
also want to check the IDMS listServ to see if other clients have used this
product, that we might not be aware of.

So here I am - checking with IDMS-L.

Feedback?

Re: IDMS R16 and Webservices
"We use a product called Service Builder from Clientsoft to provide IDMS
data in the form of Web services. As implemented here the product uses
CICS services to scrape IDMS screens, reformat the data into XML, and
return it to the Web service caller.

The development piece of the product is installed on a PC. The developer
""teaches"" the product how to navigate a series of 3270 screens and
select the fields of interest. The product then generates CICS COBOL
source which is transferred to the mainframe, compiled, and executed as
a standard CICS online program.

The CICS piece of the product comes with a listener which accepts
incoming service requests and invokes the appropriate generated COBOL
program. The COBOL program uses a function of CICS called FEPI (Front
End Programming Interface) to navigate a series of IDMS screens.

I believe both the product and vendor names have changed since we
acquired the product - I think DataDirect Technologies is the current
vendor.
