Hello All:

Have you tried UNIT=(CART,,DEFER) ? Since there is nothing to offload it
may not mount the tape?

this is what our tape DD looks like:

// LRECL=280,
// RECFM=VB

you might also look into why a log offload would be generated when
there is nothing to offload
1) a bottleneck of offload jobs that, when resolved, left the last
offload job with nothing to do?
2) a log offload submitted during downtime only to find that the last
internally submiited offload didnt run until after the CV had come
down, thus leaving the ""scheduled"" log offload nothing to do ...
3) someone formatted the log file?

we use ICEMAN to copy the individual logs to the .DAILY

Re: BCF Log Offload
"Jim

We offload to an empty file. The file is allocated, opened, in update, and closed in the preceding step; we use a very simple program to do this. So whatever BCF does the file is still available.

Subject: BCF Log Offload

Listers,

I ran into an age-old problem. BCF log offload receives a ""NOTHING TO
PRINT"" message and a CC = 4 yet still catalogs the output dataset.

When we run our daily log rollup job, it abends with a wrong length
record error on the empty file.

Are there any valid condition codes other than zero for the log offload?
Can I delete the cataloged output file when I receive anything other
than a CC=0?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

problem with log and journal offloads ...
"I went back and checked my nots - i had exactly the opposite problem with
journals ... if there was nothing to offload, the output dataset was NOT
opened - this might sound like a good thing, but we were (at the time. i
have since abandoned) to append the just-offloaded journal to a
cumulative daily journal tape - and since the we deleted the offload tape
after a successful append, in the case where there was no output (hence no
output tape, no version +1 to read in, the iebgener (or whatever i used)
failed with a JCL error!

Re: BCF Log Offload
"All,

Thank you all for your responses. I have added a program as the first
step of the offload that catalogs a GDG file. The BCF step uses that
output (disk file) to offload the log. If no data exists, the file
still has an EOF and can be read by subsequent programs.

I thought about the BR14 to delete the file at the end of the process
but what if there are legitimate 0004 return codes?

Thanks again,

Jim
