Re:DMCL JCL

Discussion created by ca.portal.admin on May 10, 2007
Hello all,
I've been asked to build two new IDMS regions for a new and expanding
database. It has been years since I've built a new IDMS region from
scratch so I need some assistence with my memory. Obviously I will need
a new DMCL before I can do just about anything. I usually don't build
the DMCL in our environment. The application folks do that and the JCL
they have is only for CV mode they have no examples of creating a DMCL
in local mode. All I want to do is create a generic DMCL with the input
included in the R160DMCL member of PPOPTION. Does anyone have an example
of the JCL needed to create a new DMCL in local mode that they would be
willing to share with me

Thanks for your help and suggestions

affect of ACF2 parameter JOBFROM on an IDMS system?
"we have some auditors in from the DoD for an application that deals
exclusively with Military - although this app has NO IDMS they feel the
need to tell us how to run our IDMS environments - they have suggested
JOBFROM be specified on ACF 2 definitions for all IDMS environments - has
anyone run this way? what are the ramifications?

thanks

Re: affect of ACF2 parameter JOBFROM on an IDMS system?
"If memory serves, and sometimes it doesnt, JOBFROM is only valid for
MUSASS address spaces, IDMS does not have to run as a MUSASS.

Therefore could involve Mucho Grande INTRDR JCL and ACF rule changes.

Linking ADS built-in functions with ADSOMAIN
"I have several times heard the recommendation to link the ADS built-in
functions with ADSOMAIN to improve performance. I have some questions
about this:

1) How much improvement have other sites seen after doing this?
2) Are there any drawbacks?
3) Some of the BIF modules are not used here. Would it be better to
link only the highly-used ones, or all of them?

FW: Linking ADS built-in functions with ADSOMAIN
"P.s. Our program pools are big enough that the BIF modules are only
loaded once. Does that make a difference in this decision?

IUA Fall Workshop
"The IUA is planning an East Coast Fall Workshop for mid to late October of this year. We are tentatively planning on 3 main tracks with the possibility of side-tracks depending on need and demand. The suggested tracks are Applications, Database Administration and in keeping with this year's CA World theme, IDMS Modernization.

We need your help in determining the following:

1) Are you interested in attending ?

2) Are our suggested tracks the correct ones?

3) What individual sessions are needed?

Please talk with your application managers to help us determine what topics they need to have presented and, also, what their wish-list would be.

Please let us know if you have an idea for a session, and whether you would be interested in presenting it. A formal call for speakers will be broadcast when we have a firm date for the event.

Re: Linking ADS built-in functions with ADSOMAIN
"Hello Kay:

I always include all of the built in functions in the link edit of ADSOMAIN
(even though some may not be used) it will increase the size of the ADSOMAIN
load module and there will be a shorter instruction path to execute them.

Yes, I have seen improvements when there were millions of calls to the built
in functions, no, I have never experienced any drawbacks, it's pretty hard
to measure especially with today's larger MIPS ratings on CPU's, but if you are
hurting on CPU Utilization it should help.

One thing you will notice is that the built in function load modules
RHDCEV01, etc. will no longer be loaded into the program pools.

I have JCL to do this link edit outside of SMP/E if you are interested, I
also have an SMP/E user modification as well.

Re: Linking ADS built-in functions with ADSOMAIN
"When you normally link to a BIF module IDMS does a binary search of the
program pool index
to find the BIF module. Depending on the number of BIF calls made from
ADS and
the size of the program pool index, the program pool lookup can run up
quite a bit of CPU.

Linking the BIF modules with ADSOMAIN as a composite reduces the BIF
call down
to one branch and link instruction and eliminates the program pool index
search.
The amount of savings depends on the number of BIF calls. Do a
DCMT D PROGRAM RHDCEV** for each BIF module at the end of the day
and note the number of calls.

The only drawback is having to remember to run the link when you put on
maintenance
or upgrade.

In the two shops where I have implemented the change we reduced CPU
consumption
5 percent and 16 percent respectively. The number of BIF calls ran
anywhere from 200,000 to
over a million per day.
