Re: [IDMSVENDOR-L] bachman diagrams

Discussion created by ca.portal.admin on Nov 16, 2007
if anyone kept old issues of ABOVE THE LINE, in one of the last issues
there was a list of several schema mapper utilities available for sale -
i dont even know if I still have them, but if i do they are at home - i
will have to check

there is one i remember (but not the name) that sat as a massive excel
spreadsheet macro - it read a downloaded schema definition and drew the
diagram - i was very impreseed with it (but not enough to buy it haha)

Re: bachman diagrams
"Can this product include Space Reporting information from a Print Space
Report plus program and work record information from the Dictionary right into
the Bachman/Data Structure Diagram that it draws?

I didn't see anything like that on their web site or their examples.

Optionally our product Schema Plus can include this space, program and work
record information in the Windows Help or HTML File that it creates.

Plus Schema Plus can work with individual Subschema's, this is more likely
to be helpful to a developer when working with a specific Subschema and not the
entire Schema.

I prefer to drag and drop what records that I want on the Bachman, that way
I can position them exactly where I want them and exactly how I want the
diagram to look.

What would a Bachman of the entire CAS Schema look like if it was drawn
automatically?

Schema Plus has all of the features of this product and then some and is a
lot less expensive.

Cut from Above The Line #38

Repost of Schema Diagram Generator Information

In issue #38, I reported my work with a 3rd-party product. The RTF
version clearly separated (via bold vs non-bold type) my comments vs.
those of the software vendor. those reading the inline text version of
issue #38, however, were not able to see the distinction and may have
attributed vendor marketing text as my own comments. I have chosen to
re-print the article in quest, clearly marking my comments from those of
the vendor:

***My comments begin here: Editor's note: I was heavily involved in the
Beta phase of developing this product - The result is a nifty utility
that creates the database record diagrams with which we are all
familiar. I would highly recommend this software to anyone who needs a
quick way to turn schema definitions into customizable diagrams. ***My
comments end here. ***Vendor Comments begin here: DataVision, a software
development company, has introduced the Schema Diagram Generator (SDG);
a new software product designed to help IDMS DBA's and Programmers
create data structure diagrams. It is a fully automated windows-based
utility that creates IDMS data structure diagrams in less than 60
seconds. After the schema source code has been punched and transferred
to the PC, the user simply opens the SDG, selects the schema and clicks
""draw"". This product is far superior to anything on the market. It is
easier to use and faster than any utility designed to create these types
of diagrams. The Schema Diagram Generator saves IDMS shops time and
money. More information can be obtained by visiting the company's
website at http://data-vision.home.mindspring.com. ***Vendor comments
end here.

I googled the product and this is the current URL..

"Is anyone else getting messages with no text?

My most recent example is my response to Lisa Shaffner (included below.)
When my post arrived in my in-box, it showed a 2K size and contained no
text (as you can see at the vary bottom of this post.) Since August,
I've received over 20 such messages.

I'm puzzled.

Any time,

By the way, I would have sized for 2000 + records in the index and the
