Re: CA IDMS Enhancement Request Voting (January 3-31, 2008)

Terry -

The survey contains no descriptions whatsoever, so you have to get the
PDF
document.

I went to the website and tried to login to get the PDF, but I get no
login
screen.... it just hangs.

Anybody else having this problem?

Also, was it really that hard that the description for each DAR couldn't
be
put in the survey itself?

Thanks.

All,

The balloting to prioritize the CA IDMS DARS is now open. In order to
vote you need to be signed up for the PLC - IDMS (IUA/EIUA) at the
causergroups.com site. The DARS listed are ones not currently targeted
for a release. Any DARS that CA has targeted for Version 17 are not
listed on the ballot. On the causergroup IDMS PLC site in the news
section there is a Product Requirements sub-section where you can
download a PDF of the detail DAR descriptions.

If an enhancement you are interested in is not listed, I encourage you
to open a DAR request.

This is your chance to influence the direction of future enhancements to
CA IDMS.

Let the IDMS Caucus begin !

Convert Page
"Hi,

We have been doing some Convert Page's recently, and have some more to do
soon. In the Utility manual, it says;

""If an area that is being converted has a cross-area set or linked
constraint, then you must convert all areas touched by the set or link.
You must determine what files are affected, and therefore what files must
be converted.""

We got burnt by this in Test, as in one of our Convert Page jobs, several
Areas/Files were accidently omitted, and it was not noticed until a User
was trying to navigate the database, and it just said, ""Read Error'. It
was subsequently backed out and re-done correctly.

What I want to know, and would appreciate feedback on, is if this happened
in production, and we (for eg.) converted Areas ""A"", ""B"", and ""C"". But
only later (to late to back anything out) we discovered that we should
have also included Area ""D"" in the Convert Page job, how would we fix
this?? Would an OBTAIN, DELETE, and STORE (of the obtained record) of all
the records in Area ""D"" fix the problem??

Thank you.

Re: Convert Page
"Not an answer to the question, but a suggestion on how to possibly avoid
it happening in the first place:

Add to your procedure a ""DUMMY"" run of IDMSBCF UNLOAD for the area(s)
being converted, just long enough to get the ""AREA RECORD DEPENDENCY
TABLE"" report created by IDMSUNL1 (and then you can cancel it, or
perhaps give it a ridiculously small SYS002 file allocation of one track
so it abends on its own). At any rate, if there's a cross-area set or
linked constraint involved, it'll be on that report. Why introduce
possible human error and compile such a list by hand when IDMS will do
it for you? This of course will only identify the AREAs involved - it's
up to you to get the FILEs right if you need to use the FILE syntax . .
.

Nevertheless, this is one of those times (i.e. discovering the error in
your Test system before committing the same one on Production) that you
just get to stop and be thankful!!! :D
