Re:Multitasking - is it worth it?

Discussion created by ca.portal.admin on Oct 2, 2008
I have a system which is purely Batch and CICS. There is no IDMS DC or ADS.

Would multitasking bring me any advantage or would it just be an overhead?

R16 SP6 . Z/OS 1.9. 4 processor large IBM thing - I lose track of the model numbers.

My system is well buffered and uses dataspaces extensively. CPU availability is my issue. There is no paging and I/O is not a problem.

Thanks for any tips.

Re: Multitasking - is it worth it?
" That is what I thought. In my case MT won't help.

I have looked at or relative DP values although I can only do it in =
SDSF. I haven't access to the actual definitions.

It appears that IDMS, most of DB2 and CICS all have the same DP. The =
CICSPLEX manager has a higher priority. Batch jobs are much lower. The =
IRLM and ADMT components of DB2 are higher - I am not a DB2 man so I =
don't know what they do but the CPU use is low.=20

Up above IDMS in the food chain are a few things like RACF, JES2, =
CATALOG etc. Also the TSO sessions for the System programmers and the =
operators. Normal user TSO sessions are lower.

Worrying things which generate a lot of CPU and are above are TABEX - a =
fast Tables management system from Austria used extensively by all batch =
and CICS programs, and the big one which is TN3270 which I believe is =
the FTP driver. I think this may be the problem. I just did a snapshot =
in SDSF and it is using 30% CPU at the second highest DP.
