Re:DASD Upgrades

Discussion created by ca.portal.admin on Feb 4, 2009
Our service provider announced plans to upgrade DASD hardware from mod-3
(3,339 cyl) to mod-L (32,760 cyl).

Currently we have many multi-file areas with some exceeding 50 files.
The general approach is to keep allocation down to roughly 12,500 tracks
(quarter volume) for each file. I was told this allowed for flexibility
when having to perform these migrations (and there's probably other
reasons) but I'm not convinced this is a good way to manage our database
files.

Would it be practical to allocate DB files to the volume's maximum size
when necessary? Any general rules to follow when allocating large
areas?

TIA,

IUA Connections
"IUA Connections is due to be published in March and again in September
of this year. So this is a timely reminder for any who would like to
make a contribution to do so now! But also - a question for the list
users - does anybody have any objections to their posts being reprinted
in IUA Connections? There have been some terrific posts in recent time
with lots of valuable insight - it would be a shame not to share with
those who don't use IDMS-L.

I would make the observation that having made the post to a ""public
forum"" the information or comments you have provided are already ""public
domain"" - so I'm just checking to see if there are some who would have
objections to having their posts re-published elsewhere. If so - please
let me know - probably offline would be best - although public
discussion on this is of course encouraged and always welcome.

Looking forward to your continued contributions to IUA Connections and
your ongoing, informative and valuable contributions to IDMS-L.

Cheers - Gary =20
