R17 electronic download questions

1) When I order an install tape, the process begins with a phone call to CA. Is this also true for the electronic download? If not, can someone point me to the starting place? So far, all I have is the R17 cover letter and the ""Electronic Software Delivery"" manual.



2) Will the electronic download include the product authorization sheets? If not, is there a way to get them all at once online? I do see where I can get them individually, but that would be a lengthy process.

"as many of us convert to high-performance storage protection option, one
thing to be careful of

if you perform a DCPROFILE - you will see two entries:

PRIMARY STORAGE
PROTECT KEY:
(what is assigned to MVS as the ""storage key"" of the started task)

and

ALTERNATE STORAGE KEY
(what you assign in the SYSGEN)

make sure that they are NEVER assigned to the same value (accidentally or
intentionally)

death will be quick and painless, but your CV will die at startup
nontheless

USER COMPLETION CODE=3988


DEFINITION 3988
Storage protection has been requested via the PROTECT
option
of the SYSTEM statement in system generation. However,

the primary protect key is equal to the alternate protect

key. The effect of this will be no storage protect.




the messsage is correct - there will be no storage protect because there
will be no system available to protect .....

Some additional tips:

1) The product download page for IDMS/DB Core contains the entire conte=
nts
of the old install tape as one ESD file (includes Tools and ENDEVOR/DB)=
.
There is also a file containing the install tape for the latest version=
of
CA COMMON Services and another for Visual DBA. You may or may not need =
to
spend the download time for all of these. The product download page for=
all
of the other individual products contains only their authorization shee=
t.
Pulling them all down individually was a bit of a pain but they don't t=
ake
very long either.

2) Be sure to read, learn and inwardly digest the documentation on the
product download page that describes the download process. It contains=

detailed instructions on how to use IBM's mainframe UNIX facilities to
extract the MVS install datasets out of the ESD file. They were easy to=

follow - even for a UNIX tyro like myself. Be aware that you are goin=
g to
need an MVS system programmer's help to set up your corner of the UNIX
environment to work in. It is unlikely you have the authority to do it=
for
yourself (I know I didn't).

Hi Kay,

This is how it works.

The electronic download is done directly from the Support Online site.=
No
need to call CA.

1) Electronic download
- login to Support Online (http://support.ca.com)
- select Download Center from the left menu and then the type of downl=
oad
Products
- then select the product, release and genlevel and click GO
- on next page, Product Downloads, you will find a list of downloa=
ds
available.
- you may choose the download type and download the individual
components

2) Product Authorizations

When you select CA IDMS, one of the files available for download i=
s
IDMS/DB Product Authorization.
But that is the only one you get. To get the other PAs you will ne=
ed
to select each product individually
or
Open a Case requesting them with the list of the products and we w=
ill
send you the PAs you need.
