Gary,

If you still need articles, I could do one of the following:

1) Introduction to relational databases and SQL for IDMS programmers.

2) SQL ""explain"" program - a batch program that executes the IDMS SQL ""ex=
plain"" command and converts the result into plain English. Sample output b=
elow. I would provide the source code for the IUA contributed code library=
. This one would apply only to sites with the SQL option.

--------------------------------------

SQLIN FILE:

SELECT *

FROM DUSEVIEW.USER_ID_DEPT

WHERE DEPT =3D ''DHS''

--------------------------------------

EXPLAIN:

-- QUERY BLOCK 1

STEP 1 - ACCESS TABLE 'DUSESCHM.DUDEPT' VIA CALC KEY

STEP 2 - ACCESS TABLE 'DUSESCHM.DUCONT' VIA SET 'DUDEPT-DUCONT' (MEMBER)

STEP 3 - JOIN RESULTS OF STEPS 1 AND 2 USING SET

STEP 4 - ACCESS TABLE 'DUSESCHM.DUAUTH' VIA SET 'DUCONT-DUAUTH' (MEMBER)

STEP 5 - JOIN RESULTS OF STEPS 3 AND 4 USING SET

STEP 6 - ACCESS TABLE 'DUSESCHM.DUSYST' VIA SET 'DUSYST-DUAUTH' (OWNER)

STEP 7 - JOIN RESULTS OF STEPS 5 AND 6 USING SET

STEP 8 - SORT RESULTS OF STEP 7 (BECAUSE OF 'ORDER BY' PARAMETER)

Re: IDMS Connections - call for submissions for September 2010 Issue
"Kay - this e-mail attachment was the last e-mail I can find from you - I think you had intended to send something on SQL for either March/September - if you did I can't find it.

I was also thinking along the lines of ""Success Stories"" or ""Business Value Stories"" - where instead of focussing on how to use a technology we might instead focus on what was achieved from a business point of view - and what value was returned to the business.

You wrote a couple of articles about TCP/IP and XML - I was wondering if maybe you could comment about the application instead of the details of the technology? Just a thought - thanks for keeping in touch and for your ongoing interest in Connections - cheers - Gary
