"I did find in some (most?) of the code that they are also calling a Validate version (CSYPVNUM) which does not extend the run-unit and is retrieval.
So in those cases I guess the same problem should not exist.

It was misleading because they were getting a bunch of Stalls and Deadlocks - in fact over a period of time approximately half of the D/S involved the CSYPGNUM.
( although they seemed to be concentrated on just one of the PREFIX-MASK records and one NUMBER-MASK (for a different type of number.)
