Re: [IDMSVENDOR-L] Question about adding a user to a group

kay - when added thru the ALTER USER - the group you specify is treated as
the DEFAULT group for the user - the the association is made thru the
ALTER GROUP - no such ""fdefault"" status exists

what that means i do not know - but that is the difference (I believe)

[IDMSVENDOR-L] Question about adding a user to a group

When a user is added to a group with the ""ALTER GROUP"" command, the group
s=3D
hows in the user display as ""WITHIN GROUP group-name"".

But if the user is added to the group with the ""ALTER USER"" command, the
gr=3D
oup shows in the user display as ""GROUP group-name"". Unless you add the
us=3D
er to a second group that way - then the first group is changed to ""WITHIN
=3D
GROUP"", and the second group displays as ""GROUP"".

Do these two methods of adding a user to a group actually do the same
thing=3D
, or not?

The reason I am asking is because in Visual DBA R17, you can add a user to
=3D
a group from the same screen where you create or alter the user. This
woul=3D
d save time, rather than having to navigate through the ""display group""
scr=3D
eens first. But it appears that doing it from the user screen is using
the=3D
""CREATE USER"" or ""ALTER USER"" commands under the covers. And I'm not
sure=3D
if that accomplishes the same thing as adding the user to the group with
""=3D
ALTER GROUP"".

"The default default group (no, that was not a stutter) is PUBLIC. Does that mean that if you specify a default group other than PUBLIC, then the user is not a member of PUBLIC?
