Applications therefore don't worry about EBCDIC to ASCII conversions or whether a dataset is on tape or not. However, to John's point about binary, packed decimal zoned decimal, etc., those data types are problematical for UNIX environments. If the source database has them they have be converted to display numeric for transmittal to the UNIX environment (with a preceding sign if necessary).
