Our IT department just underwent a massive reorg. I'm just looking for tips. How do the rest of you handle reorgs. How do you go about redefining your Department OBS structure in Clarity? Rename the old departments to match the new department names? What if some are combined into new departments and some go away? What if some become completely obsolete? Do you try to keep your department OBS tree at a higher level as to avoid this problem? Generally our top level departments are functional areas like Engineering, Applications, Infrastructure, with a web of sub-departments. While the sub-departments generally undergo frequent change, the functional areas do not.

You can rename departments and you can move , but you cannot change the ID.
First create a new temporary OBS which has the units and the structure of the new Department structure for verifying purposes.

You move the departments by changing the parent. Therefore a good help is a list of units to remain with their new parents.
Consider printing old and new structures on paper.
Write the new parents on the old structure.
Move the obsolete units under a new parent "Obsos" which can be at the level of you choice.

When the structure is verified and you start actually moving the units you can mark on the prints the units that have been moved.

Any object associations and transactions stay with the units.
If you need create new units, because there is no with the new ID then those will not have any object associations.

If units are combined you have to options
    - to use one of them
    - create a new to replaces the combined ones
