Interpreting frontend traces

I find the automatic frontend races very useful. Of all the components listed in a trace (db, jms, etc,) the frontend itself also shows up. Is the time attributed to "frontend" just a bucket for "everything else?" It appears so, because frontend + everything else equals the total duration.

In some cases, the time attributed to that "everything else" bucket is a very large percentage of the total. From this can I assume there is some other "backend" call that's not being traced? The obvious things are all there, such as db and jms. I'm working on adding ldap, but I can't imagine that accounts for such a large percentage.
