Does anyone know if there are any tools to create Bachman diagrams still on the market?

    Bob,

The last time I looked paper, pens, pencils and rulers could be found at most office supply stores! :-)

I still use Schema Plus, marketed by Arch Consulting.

Bob, I have an IBM Flowcharting Template, plastic, 9.5" x 4", with envelope sleeve that has directions on usage.
I have an IBM HIPO TEMPLATE with sleeve, also containing directions on usage.
I also have some punch hole cards, brown, already punched, that say "Cullinane Corporation" on them.
Wonder what became of that company.
Send me your address and I will ship you these tools via snail mail.

    Regards,
    Ed McKinney

I found that the small Post-Its work well on a whiteboard. You can move them around wherever you need without all those nasty pencil erasure lines.

I have been using Visio for years.

    Thank you,

I REALLY miss CA-ARCHITECT - it was a GREAT tool - version 1 was a bit limited in the size of the schema to be created - but V2 was GREAT - sorry it was sunset (in the late 80s?)

Thanks to everyone who responded, both on the list and offline. As usual, you've all given me good ideas and things to pursue.

The DBA Tool kit's SCHEMA MAPPER works for existing databases. It does make a LARGE diagram though.

I used to have a rubber stamp for the basic lined box, like this:

    [font=Courier New]
    ---------------------------------+
    |......................|...........|
    |......................|...........|
    |------------------------------|
    |........|........|........|.......|
    |------------------------------|
    |..............................|...|
    |------------------------------+---|
    |..................................|
    ----------------------------------[font]

Here is a link to a picture from the Image Gallery!

So, I could just stamp out the records on a blank sheet and then just write in them the record names, area names, via set or calc key, etc., and then using a ruler, draw the sets manually.

I might still have it somewhere in one of my boxes. I don't recall whose idea that was, but it worked out fairly well, especially for a quick prototype.

For professional looking final Bachmans I used a version of VISIO.

Hey, I still have my rubber stamp, for nostalgia's sake. It helps me remember how low tech productive we were.

Speaking of low-tech productivity, I remember creating screens for an IDMS r4.5/Intercomm system using punched cards because we couldn't afford TSO, or it's predecessor, CRJE. And, sure nuff, I've got a rubber stamp too.

I remember going to Cullinet classes and being the resident expert in INTERACT. The company I worked for thought giving everyone TSO access was too much overhead.

So we used INTERACT to do our work. Only other place I saw it was at education classes.

I have some Visio macros I created back in 1999, if that would be of interest.
They can read a schema file, and fill in the records and indexes. Then you just have to move them around to make it pretty.
It is not anything fancy, but it saves a lot of typing.

    Tommy,

Would you be willing to share the macros in our community space within MyCA?

There is a product for IDMS called SchemaFX. Find it at brothersoft.com. It uses Visio for the rendering and so Visio is also needed. Your schema source is the input.
