At the bottom of the Audit Trail Attribute configuration page is the section 'Purge Audit Trail'
The option 'Days after which audit records will be purged' is a field that should ALWAYS have a value specified when you elect to use the Audit Trail functionality on any object.

If this field is left empty, the records will remain in the audit trail tables, even if you execute the 'Purge Audit Trail' job.
This will cause performance issues on the Administration > Audit Trail List View, because this is the page that displays ALL audit records for all audit trail attributes.
