Problem formatting tapes
tape format library

Hi everybody.
We have this issue since two weeks and we're not able to find a solution.

We have the Arcserve Backup R15 6222 Build.
Our backup jobs (incremental during the week days and complete on sunday) are working correctly as usual.
Two weeks ago our complete backup job on Sunday went wrong with this error: W3825 Unable to find this media or a blank media. (Group=PGRP0 MEDIA=DOMENICA)

From that moment on we were unable to format tapes (DOMENICA one and other) because we get the "MEDIA PROTECTED DEVICE" even if the tape it's not.

We got this information from the support to disable the reading of barcodes on tapes (that we don't use anyway) but neither this information was useful to solve the problem.

Thank you in advace for your support.
Bye.

p.s.: attached you can find our tape, activity and task log files.
Attachments: TAPE.txt (459.8k), activity.txt (290.2k), TskJob06_2129_2130.txt (628.7k)

Is it something to do with the retention on a media pool?

You have to remove the tapes from vault. You have to use a MM Admin from administration section.
I suggest you don't use media Vaults this moment.

First of all, thank you guys.
We don't have the enterprise licence so I suppose i cannot manage the MM as you said.
This is moreover strange cause it seems we had this licence before and we get this error about CA Licence missing in the Windows Event Viewer now.
Could be that the program is originating from that?

Anyway this is our configuration of media pool:

We have 2 media pools (WEEK and WEEK_ALT)

Each one has this two configurations

Min number in media SAVE SET: 1
Retention time: 13 days
Prune retention time: 0 days

What I find strange (and maybe it's not) is that I cannot find any SCRATCH SET but only one SAVE SET

Is it normal??

Could this be helpful to you in order to help me?

Thanks

Hi,

i assume that you can not find a scratch set because you have set the option for the global scratch set (open the Server Manager, got to the Tape Engine tab and verify if the option for the global scratch set is active - this is the default setting).
If you want each media pool to have it's own scratch set, disable the setting is described above.

Can you tell us, on what operation system you run your arcserve installation?
If Windows Server 2008 or above, please ensure that you have disabled UAC.

You can find in ypur tape log infoamtion:
[03/09 15:59:12 2a50 2 DM 3] ASWriteToASLogWithJobID: JobID[0] [8022] [Failed to format media in slot:11 (EC=TAPE IS PROTECTED BY MEDIA MANAGEMENT)[Device:1][IBM 3573-TL ]]

In my opinion you are using a MM Admin. Do you have a icon MM Admin in administration section ?

Hi Chris.
You're right about Global Scratch Set, is there and therefore I assume this is the right setting (it was already used before the problem originated).

We use ArcserveBackup on Windows Server 2003 Standard that's a domain controller and the one with almost all the enterprise share.

Another thing I noticed is that in the Global Scratch I have only 6 tapes called DOMENICA_ALT that's exactly the name of the tape that firstly gave the problem with the backup.

It seems I have it as you said but I can only see this icons:

SERVER ADMIN
CENTRAL AGENT ADMIN
DEVICE MANAGER
DEVICE CONFIGURATION
DEVICE WIZARD
DEVICE GROUP CONFIGURATION
DATABASE MANAGER
ALERT MANAGER
USER PROFILE
AGENT DEPLOYMENT

I tested this situation in my lab. I recived identical message when I assigned a tape to Voult.
Please run a comand line as adminitrator. Change directory to ARCserve Home directory, typically c:\Program Files (x86)\CA\ARCserve Backup\. In next step please run "ca_mmo -init". Answer "y" on question "Are you sure that you want to initialize MMO Database".
Do you recive message "Can not initilize MMO Database because same media are being used by a Voult" ? or not ?

Sorry for the late reply.

I tried to run ca_mmo -init but I've got this message:

"This application can only be executed when the Enterprise Module is installed."

This is strange because actually we don't have this Enterprise Module and probably we've never had it before.

I found this procedure on the ArcServe KB:
https://support.ca.com/irj/portal/anonymous/kbtech?searchID=TEC399838&docid=399838&bypass=yes&fromscreen=kbresults

Seems interesting to solve my problem but how can I initialize ASMMO.DBD? I get stuck there.

Thanks.

TEC399838 is for old version of ARC
My proposal - install Entreprise Module, use MM Admin to initialize MMO Database, uninstall EM.

Hi.

I've tried to remove the trial version of Enterprise Module but everytime I start again Arcserve it reappears and I get the "CA_LIC" licence failure message in the event viewer.
It seems I'm unable to uninstall this Enterprise Module even though we've never bought a licence for it and it's not working at all.

Due to this I'm unable to try your suggestion.
Is there a way to uninstall a licence (even if it's a trial) without passing by the Manage Licence tool?

Anyway, I tried again to format other tapes. for a couple of them we get this "BAD MEDIA" message but then I've been able to format the last one I have and now I'm looking to see if the complete backup it's going to work on Sunday.

I had a look to into media pool. I'm not sure I got the right using for that. So far I've two media pools (one for the normal week and another one for the alternate week).
For each one I've a Save Set and all the media from Monday to Sunday. No scratch media in there because I've the Global Scratch enabled.
In the Global Scratch I see only "Sunday" alternative week media and I've some doubt this is correct 'cause I'm expecting to find medias that are going to be used for the next jobs.
Is it ok?

Thanks again.
