Enforcing Unique Values on Object Instance Attributes

I have a custom master object with a lookup based attribute called Project on it. How can I ensure that when a user creates an instance of this object that the value chosen in Project is unique across all other object instances? This is v.12.06.

I have tried modifying the lookup so that its NSQL does not return any Project IDs which are already referenced in the object instances but this gives me display issues (value is not displayed in the Project field).

The studio developer guide talks about a Unique field level setting but I can't see that anywhere.

I don't want to have to create scripts/processes to do validation and I don't want to add a constraint on the Project column in the database if at all possible. Any other solutions you can think of?

Thanks in advance

Owen
