Filter Portlet functionality not what I expected.

I created a portlet page that has 3 portlets but share 2 common elements that I though would make sense to run a filter portlet at the top to allow all three portlets to filter together.

The issue I'm coming across is that all 3 of the portlets are rather large queries so I have the filter data set to 'Do no show results until I filter' but then it doesn't listen to the Filter Portlet. If I try to filter it does nothing, if I add in the filter to the individual portlets I can see that those fields get populated but it doesn't click the button for me. Since ideally I would want the 3 portlets to not have a filter listed individually at all and if needed just have it collapsed having the user expand or have to click over and over again the filter button seems to counter the idea of having a filter portlet functionality.

Is there a way I can use a Filter Portlet to filter the data in the 3 portlets without having the portlets configured to 'Automatically show results'?
