Perl SDK and nimLogin

I was looking at this forum thread about getting a probe list using the Java SDK:
Giving "probe_list" authorization to a probe
Some of the information provided in that forum made it sound like custom probes that are called by the controller should be able to use the controller/robot SID rather than having to do a nimLogin of their own.  Is this true?  If so, how do I take advantage of it in the Perl SDK?

When working on Perl probes that seem to need a SID, I use nimLogin and specify the username and password in clear text in the config file.  It would be better to not store the credentials in the config file, especially in clear text, so any option to use the robot SID would be very helpful.  I do not think I have seen anything in the documentation about how to do this.
