Has any Organization re-labelled the Cost Type value from Operating to Expense? What were the challenges/gotchas? was it worth the effort?
We did this at a client I worked with and there really were not any issues. As long as your reports/portlets are using the CMN_LOOKUPS_V table to get the display attribute, you shouldn't have any problems. The only real issue is that in the WIP tables, the value stored in the database is "OPERATING", but if you join to the lookup table, you can display the NAME and not the CODE.
While this is technically possible to do, as mentioned above by DK_Winmill, do think about what this means longer term:
1) The labeling of "Operating" is used beyond just project and task. In Portfolio Management feature, Targets labels are displayed as Capital and Operating.
2) all standard shipped reports, portlets that displays cost type related information will have labels of "Operating" and will not match the re-labeled value
3) there are screens and views where the value cannot be re-labeled through studio configuration.
So the larger impact is - if you want consistent labeling within the system, you need to be prepared to re-label every module and screens that you are utilizing and can display cost type; and likely some places unless you customize the product code, it is not possible to re-label.
Most customers I have talked to I have recommended not to go down this route simply because the long term house-keeping cost outweights the visual benefits. You can always create reports that you use "EXPENSE" as the label in the output.
