Re: consolidating journals ???

A lot of shops offload to a disk GDG then consolidate those generations to
tape at the end of the day. That seems to work well.

how do other shops consolidate journals?

1) at offload time, append to daily file?
2) af offload time, append to file until X journals are appended, then
start with new tape?
3) at and of day, accumulate all journal tapes onto daily file?
4) do not consolidate - keep X number of journals (enough to cover data
since last full backup)

I chose to implement #1, but about once a year a jobs goes wild and
updates/deletes millions (or at least many) of rows and , despite 6
journals, the offloads cannot keep up with updating (the offloading and
appending taking more than the previous, sometimes over 10 minutes)

I am willing to admit that my approach my not be the best and look for
other alternatives ... so I am looking for how others do it

in other shops. is the time needed and possible delays caused by
realtime consolidation be worth the time saved if a non-auto recovery
IS needed?, or do other shops just waint until ""an event"" to
consolidate the journal offloads?

thanks,

Re: Data Encryption
"If the concern is only that the data be encrypted while it's in the database
it might be sufficient to compress it with Presspack. Such compressed data
is unreadable without the, record specific, compression table which could be
held in a secured load library. Compression/encryption occurs through the
use of a database procedure.

If you need to move the data around outside IDMS, especially to other
platforms, then the puzzle gets more, er, interesting.

Hello all,

I can see that this will be the next big thing in databases because of
HIPPA and SOX. Oracle has recently added encription support in their 10G
release.

Encription was brought up in this list within the last 3 months. We have
been using it for over 20 years and after it was brought up on the list, I
received an email from our original vendor who supplied the encription
code. We encrypt parts of records and never to keys I believe. We don't
have the source code which has always been a concern. However, the data
that is encripted is now old pension systems that is read only.

Re: encryption in idms
"Lynn,

If your encryption program is assembler there is a utility program to
decompile it into source code. It was in one of IBM's support pack, I
can dig it up if your interested.
