CA World Notes and Ramblings

Discussion created by ca.portal.admin on Apr 30, 2007
Greetings all,

I thought it would be a good idea to send out some impressions of this
year's CA World.

I thought is was a good idea to have a real theme for the CA-IDMS track
(modernization). I am encouraged by the possible enhancements coming in
version 17 and beyond.
In conjunction with new CA-IDMS features, I think it is equally
important to spread information on how to leverage your CA-IDMS systems
and integrate them with the web and web based applications.
That is one of the goals the IUA will try to tackle this year.

With that said, on the to CA World report....

Thanks,
Terry Schwartz

CA World Report

High Level

CA has formed a new mainframe business unit to renew their focus on the
mainframe.
Some of the managers in this business unit are former IBM employees.

In our IUA meeting with CA CEO John Swainson, he reiterated that CA-IDMS
revenues are remaining steady and that they have no plans to change
their view of IDMS as a viable long term product. He stated that there
are many successful CA-IDMS sites and that CA needed success stories so
they could demonstrate real world IDMS uses for the various analysts.
There is an opportunity for us to work with CA to help promote CA-IDMS.
If you have a potential CA-IDMS success story your company can share,
please email me at terry.schwartz@ps.net.

There is a totally new support web site coming out in July to replace
support connect. (yeah!) The new site will have many new features that
will make it easier to correspond with support and to find problem
solutions.
Among the many improvements, you will now have the ability to change an
issue's severity.
After logging into the new support site you are presented with a list of
your open issues (no search needed). Also, there is a new search engine
which will be a welcome addition.

You can learn more about the new support connect here;

CA IDMS Specific

A commitment to the future of CA-IDMS was echoed in our meetings with
Mark Combs and Judy Kruntorad.

The theme of the CA-IDMS track was modernizing your CA-IDMS systems. The
sessions covered a variety of modernization techniques (TCP/IP, SOA, SQL
procedures, etc) and seemed to be well received.
Laura Rochon of Ajilon described the CA-IDMS sessions this way;

""The sessions flowed very smoothly, complimenting each other, giving a
good picture of all the different ways of opening up CA-IDMS to the
outsize world""

Laura Rochon

Release 17 is in development and is targeted for GA sometime in 2008.
More information on release 17 can be found here;

http://supportconnectw.ca.com/premium/idms/infodocs/idms_roadmap.pdf

For those of you who missed CA World, PDFs of the presentations for
most sessions (including mine) have been posted on the CA World website
at http://caworld.com/

Also CA will have a public webcast on June 14 at 11 AM EDT with a
detailed look at legacy modernization implementation techniques.
Details on the webcast and a registration page will be posted shortly at
http://ca.com/events

IUA News

The IUA is going to hold a fall workshop in the late October, early
November time frame. A location has not been decided nor the complete
content for the sessions. You can have input into our workshop planning
by sending an email to iuainfo@iuassn.org. If you could attend an IUA
workshop please let us know the location and subjects that would
interest you most. (they do need to be limited to CA-IDMS)

Misc

Also, see this site for interesting information on mainframe vs
alternate platform costs.

New Support site - UGGGHHH
"Among what I found at the link was this:

Knowledge Base Search.

Building on work done in late 2006, we'll introduce new search capabilities (like the ability to save searches and bookmark content) and improve the reliability of rankings provided with results.

-------

The work done on the Knowledge Base in late 2006 was a TOTAL DISASTER and has resulted in having a priority 2 issue open for over five months and things have not got much better over that course of time. In fact a sort bug was introduced months ago and even that hasn't yet been fixed. A new support site is not likely to be a good thing. It will probably take many months to sort out all the bugs and get it working properly. The support site team has a consistently poor track record over the years. They seem big on flash and very low on substance. Remember the short-lived site with the goofy wizards? Paint me pessimistic. I'd love to be proven wrong, but if I could find a bookie in Vegas that would take some action on this I think I could retire much earlier.

Re: Question on DEBUGQUEUE
"I've never had any issues doing that, but a better way is to use the
QREVIEW task to delete those abends you no longer want. Also, set the
queue retention date in the ADSALIVe macro to something reasonable.
