Daylight Savings Time

Discussion created by ca.portal.admin on Nov 2, 2007
How are those of you in the U.S. handling the switch from DST to
Standard Time this weekend? The provider we rent mainframe time from
insists that the only way to handle the change is to shut down the
machine and wait an hour, and that this is true of zOS, IDMS, DB2, and
everything that produces recovery logs. They even state that we are at
recovery risk by letting our Unix boxes run for that hour.

My PC and even my VCR can handle the change, is it true that some of the
most advanced computer systems in the world can't deal with this simple
task?

"i believe the LOGS still use date as a ""key"" and as such one of 2 things
must happen

1) shutdown for an hour to assure that log records are not written with
dates earlier than what aleady exists
2) shutdoen long enough to rename in a new (pre-formatted) set of log files

PROCEDURE FOR EXITING DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME BACK TO STANDARD TIME
(i.e. setting back the TOD clock one hour)

All CA IDMS sites regardless of the operating system must use the
following steps:

1. Use the following steps to prevent date/time stamp errors with
maps.
a. Shutdown the CV.
b. Archive any full and the active journal files.
c. Format the journal files.
d. Offload the DC log file.
e. Format the DC log file.
f. Perform the machine's date/time change operation.
g. Start up the CV (the TOD clock will now be in synch with
the regressed time from the system clock).
h. Disable the MAPC and RHDCMPUT for one hour to avoid
date/time stamp errors with maps.

Re: [IDMSVENDOR-L] Daylight Savings Time
"Logs & Journal use DATE & TIME as the key components for recovery. Therefore, with setting the system clock back an hour for Standard time, it is still necessary to shutdown the CV for that hour UNLESS you can ""swap in"" pre-formatted Journals and DCLOG files. We shut down all CV's for that hour.
