Customer ID Reassignment Question

We are in the process of integrating Clarity with a new ERP system. In doing so, we have a requirement that may cause us to have to reassign customer IDs to existing customers in Clarity. Has anyone had to do this before and what are the potential ramifications? How were historical transactions updated (with the new customer id)? Were financials impacted?
